13 Apr Race Broome – Fat Bike Style!
Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Karunjie Event Management will be presenting the inaugural MTBA Fat Bike National Champs on the beautiful Cable Beach, Broome, in Western Australia on 11 May 2018.
Simon Rimmer, Director of Karunjie Event Management is no newbie when it comes to epic events. Earning his stripes as the event director for the Gibb River Challenge for 12 years. The Gibb Challenge is “a socially competitive five-day team relay along an iconic Kimberley stock-route raising community awareness and money for bloody heroic charities” and is one event that should be on every riders bucket list!
The MTBA Fat Bike National Champs will be the auspicious prologue event to the Gibb River Challenge. The Champs “will be a short course race format of 40 minutes for men, 30 minutes for women and 20 minutes for juniors with improvised and natural beach obstacles to create a unique race experience that blends the stunning Kimberley coastline, Cable Beach’s renowned white sands, our pearling history and ancient aboriginal culture”.
But what about the spectators, you ask! Those spectating will have uninterrupted views of the fat action from an elevated area on the east side of the course. If you’re wanting to get up close and personal, head down to the warm waters of the Indian ocean and watch the riders against the magnificent backdrop of an infamous Broome sunset. Sounds enticing, doesn’t it!
Put simply a fat bike is a mountain bike wielding tyres that are 3.8 inches or wider. And therefore, if you are wanting to go for the Podium, you must have FAT tyres. No plus size….tyres that are 3.8 inches or wider.
We speak to Simon about how his Fat Bike Champs vision transformed into reality across the white sandy beautiful shores of Cable Beach in Broome.
The only thing that hurts when you ride a fat bike is your face – you can’t help but grin when you’re riding fat. I rode my first fattie from Home Valley Station to El Questro a couple of years ago and haven’t been off one since. I race them, commute with them and just have an awesome time on them. It’s like being a kid again and they’re unstoppable off-road.
The MTBA Fat Bike National Championships were inspired by the Yanks. Credit where credit’s due, the Seppos have held their epic US Open Fat Bike Beach Championships on South Carolina’s Wrightsville Beach for the last four years. It looks like a great event, but I reckon Australia totally trumps the Yanks when it comes to beaches and Cable Beach is perfectly suited as a canvas to create an exciting race event.
Creating a prologue stage in Broome for The Gibb Challenge recognises the significant contribution the town, it’s people and businesses have made to our community event over the last 11 years. The Cable Beach Sundowner and MTBA Fat Bike National Championships focus the excitement of arriving teams as they prepare for their life-defining Kimberley adventure on Australia’s iconic Gibb River Road.
Don’t have a fattie but want to join in the fat tyre adventure? No problems. Broome Cycles and Broome Camp School will have a small fleet of loan bikes that will help you on the day.
Simon and his merry gang at Karunjie Event Management are definitely on to something here. With a quick glance at the interweb, shows that there are fat bike champs held all over the world including an annual World Fat Bike Championships. In snow. Not Sand. Over winter. Not summer. Join the fat tyre revolution!
