Perth Peel Master Plan

Today the Hon. Stephen Dawson, Minister for Environment and the Hon. Mick Murray, Minister for Sport and Recreation officially launched the Perth and Peel Mountain Bike Master Plan. WestCycle has developed the plan in consultation with the West Australian Mountain Bike Associations (WAMBA), State Government, Local Government, local mountain bike clubs and the mountain bike community with funding support from the State Government and Lotterywest.

The Perth and Peel Mountain Bike Master Plan will guide strategic investment to maximise the benefits that mountain biking can offer to the Perth and Peel regions. The plan provides an opportunity to create a series of diverse and sustainable mountain bike experiences that will foster community participation, strengthen stakeholder partnerships and provide tourism opportunities.

The Master Plan has the potential to deliver 575km of purpose built mountain bike trails proposed across 24 sites and will ensure high quality infrastructure and facilities are developed to support the trail user community.

Globally, mountain biking is one of the fastest growing forms of recreational activities that is driving significant tourism returns for economies around the world. The Perth and Peel Master Plan represents a significant process of engaging with the community to provide an ambitious vision for mountain biking in this state said CEO of WestCycle Matt Fulton.

The availability of trails close to urban centres has not kept up with the rapid growth in demand from the mountain bike community. The Perth and Peel Master Plan sets a framework for investment to reverse this imbalance through the development of sustainable, well constructed and well managed trails that will benefit the Western Australian community.

The Perth Peel Master Plan is both the culmination of countless hours of work and an exciting opportunity to drive the development of trails for all mountain bikers.  It is a tool that can and has been used by government, by clubs, by WestCycle and by the broader riding community to guide, inform and to drive trail development where the need is greatest.

WAMBA would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Steering Committee, WestCycle, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Common Ground in delivering the Perth and Peel Master Plan and the efforts of the huge number of dedicated mountain bikers who laid the foundations for it.  We firmly believe this plan will help secure our sport and we look forward to riding the trails that are developed as a result of the plan. President of the West Australian Mountain Bike Association, Alex Wade.
