More than 120,000 mountain bikes are purchased in Western Australia each year. WestCycle CEO, Matt Fulton recently visited the South West of WA to meet with stakeholders to discuss the South West Mountain Bike Master Plan. When implemented, the South West will become a mountain biking destination of choice for international tourists and locals a like. It will rival world renown mountain biking destinations such as Wales, New Zealand and Whistler in Canada, who all derive significant tourist revenue from mountain biking.
The South West Mountain Bike Master Plan identifies 3 hubs that will be the envy of the global mountain biking community with each location required to have a minimum of 80km of trails. These three hubs are the first stage in the implementation of the South West Mountain Bike Master Plan which was launched in 2015. The Hubs Project focuses on 3 unique locations and experiences, including:
- Collie/Wellington’s River Valley
- Margaret River’s Gourmet Experience
- Pemberton’s Tall Trees
Mountain biking presents a significant economic opportunity for the South West Region, once the three trail hubs are operational they will deliver more than $11 million per annum to the local economies and generate more than 70 full time positions.
Highlights from the trip included:
- Meeting with the Shire of Manjimup (Pemberton Trail Hub), Pemberton Mountain Bike Park, and the Pemberton Chamber of Commerce
- Meeting with the Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association, Shire of Augusta Margaret River, Ms Elizabeth Mettam MLA – Member for Vasse and the team at Common Ground
- Meeting with Australia’s South West, Collie Visitors Centre, Shire of Collie and the Collie Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s been fantastic to spend some time in the beautiful South West region and meeting with communities who will benefit from the implementation of the South West Mountain Bike Master Plan. The conversations have all been very positive and supportive of the potential that the project will bring to their communities – they really see the benefit for tourism and the local economy. We spoke about the future need for the creation of specific businesses that don’t exist today to cater for the future demand driven from the industry, including: more bike tour businesses and new cafes” says WestCycle CEO, Matt Fulton.
