26 Feb Team WA – XC MTB Champs
Last weekend saw the WA State Junior team battle it out at the 2018 National Cross Country Championships held right on the grounds of the University of New England, Armidale.
Under the expert guidance of WA State Coach, Mark Wardle (WA State Coach), Katja Alsop (State Assistant Coach) and Jade Smith (Manager) the WA Junior Team travelled across the desert to Armidale at the XCO.
Team WA riders pushed hard and showed the rest of Australia that WA is a contender. With many of the riders finishing in the top 10, it was Tom Rubery taking silver in U15 Men’s, JP Van Der Merwe taking silver in the U23 Men’s XCE category and Emma Smith taking 4th in U15 Women’s that were some of the highlights over the weekend.

Congratulations to all of TeamWA for your hard work during the lead up to the champs. Also a big thank you to the parents who supported our riders on their journey. Without your support, these experiences would not be achievable.
The first day of racing, the conditions experienced were perfect, with dry trails and WA riders getting a reprieve from the Perth summer heat. But this was not to stay, with the rain increasing until the heavens opened just as the U15 and U17 men lined up at the start.
With the rain dissipating, Sunday’s conditions meant the grass was wet and the dirt was grippy. Even the sky was grey without being threatening. All this meant a perfect recipe for racing.
Other WA locals that made the trip also had some fantastic results.
Outstanding efforts include:
